The familiar vs the fern

The very first fern to ever sprout in The Cove came with a funny old cat. Now, it may have been the other way round, but this far on in years, one can't be sure.

He was a quirky old cat, just like his fern; battle-worn, evidence of the elements cascading over tendrils of furry limb. They kept one another company, the cat eventually developing a taste for the frilly green leaves of the fern. He proceeded, over what felt like months but also mere hours, to strip the fern bare, leaving behind not but a few sad twigs in his wake.

This is not that fern, and my first familiar greymane has long since passed on to the other realm. But still, each time I see a fresh tendril of fern bouncing in the shade of a nearby tree, I think of him, that funny old cat and his taste for fern.
